Composting Stories #01 – Recyclers & Composters experiences around the world

“Composting has become a real activity close to our hearts. My father was one of the pioneers in this field. Today, we have managed to transform our business to meet demand while respecting the strictest quality standards.”, Jérôme Bellier, manager of BAUGEOIS COMPOST, Composter.
Located in the West of France, BAUGEOIS COMPOST is a reference in the field of composting, offering both ecological and profitable solutions for the treatment of organic waste. Since its beginnings in 2003, the company has evolved by integrating adapted technologies to meet the growing needs of the market.
On its platform of more than 20,000 m2, it processes various types of organic waste in the open air: mainly Green Waste, but also agri-food waste (orange peels, mushroom juice, etc.), and horse manure, for a total of approximately 15,000 T/year.
The entire process is carried out in an optimized manner thanks to quality equipment and rigorous monitoring of the composting stages.
Composting takes place in several stages:
1. Storage of raw materials for 1 month without grinding.
2. Grinding and pre-fermentation in a tabular pile for 1 month, with the addition of water.
3. Windrowing for 1 month, with regular turning.
4. Maturation in static phase for 2 months.
5. Screening to produce different particle sizes, some of which are bagged.
Each stage is monitored to guarantee a composting temperature that complies with legal standards (6 weeks at over 65°C), with temperatures ranging between 55 and 75°C.
BAUGEOIS COMPOST lives on the income from the price of waste treatment, and the sale of compost (in bulk or bagged). Farmers, landscapers, market gardeners, arboriculturists and individuals are the main buyers of compost. Supermarkets are also customers for bagged products.
MENART equipment: a key solution. Before 2008, BAUGEOIS COMPOST aerated its waste with a loader. Then, it invested in a used self-propelled MENART turner necessary to increase productivity, improve oxygenation, improve the quality of the compost, and reduce humidity and odor problems, particularly during the winter. In 2021, it sold the self-propelled turner to acquire a towed MENART turner which will allow it to diversify the activity with external services, thanks to the road mobility of this equipment.
Feedback on MENART equipment is very positive. The performance, reliability and ease of maintenance have allowed the company to reach a new stage in its growth.
The relationship between Baugeois Compost and MENART has been productive for over 15 years. We recently collaborated for the demonstration of the MENART eSPM self-propelled electric turner during the ACF Days in the presence of our distributor Lheureux.
